BRADY announces two subcontractor outreach events in North Carolina. BRADY has been awarded two multiple award construction contracts (MACCs). One contract is with Seymour Johnson AFB and the other is at Camp Lejeune, NC. Various task orders are issued by the Government for construction work under these MACCs and projects may vary from new construction to renovation, demolition and repair and maintenance.

BRADY is pleased to welcome its newest executive, Anthony Talamantez. Mr. Talamantez joins BRADY as a Senior Project Manager, working with BRADY's construction and environmental remediation operations. BRADY is being awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple award construction contract for general construction projects at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and other outlying facilities in North Carolina.  The maximum dollar value, including the base year and four option years, is $100,000,000.

The work to be performed provides for new construction, demolition, repair, total/partial interior/exterior alteration/renovation of buildings, systems and infrastructure, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, communication systems, installation of new or extensions to existing high voltage electrical distribution systems, extensions to the existing high pressure steam distribution systems, extensions to the potable water distribution systems, extensions to the sanitary sewer systems, additional storm water control systems, painting, removal of asbestos materials and lead paint, and incidental related work.

The resulting work will be managed out of BRADY’s North Carolina office, managed by BRADY Vice President, Sean Manning.  “We are very excited about this new contract,” stated Manning, “It is our first Navy MACC on the East Coast, and we are honored to have been chosen to serve the  design-build needs of the Navy and Marine Corps under this program.”  BRADY’s program office for this contract is located in the Matthews, North Carolina.

Early in February, BRADY employees assisted Habitat for Humanity in the building of eight, three-bedroom townhomes located on the corner of 18^th Street and G Avenue in National City.  The project involved four buildings with 2 living units in each building.  The project is located in an area with easy access to public transportation, shopping and restaurants as well as being directly across the street from a school.  BRADY’s Director of Health & Safety, Dallas Poore, organized BRADY’s involvement and commented, “The efforts of our employees demonstrate an alignment with Habitat for Humanity's mission, and the BRADY culture of a genuine concern for people. BRADY is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a five-year contract to provide Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Information Technology, Engineering and Maintenance Support Services to various bases within NAVFAC SW. The contract locations include: Naval Medical Center, Naval Base San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island, and Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado. BRADY President, Rick Brady stated, "We have been providing design and construction services for SCADA for years, particularly for the water industry. We welcome this opportunity to provide ongoing operations and maintenance for these systems. Over the past few years we have been called upon to provide more and more operations and maintenance support, and this contract falls right in line with our efforts."

The RQ-RBA Joint Venture (a joint venture of RQ Construction and BRADY) has completed the construction of a Child Development Center (CDC) at National Training Center Fort Irwin. The new $10.6M CDC is a 25,000 square foot, single story, 232 child capacity facility for children ages 6 weeks through 5 years. This facility was designed and built to strict US Army Center of Standardization (COS) guidelines. The project houses 16 classrooms, full administrative areas with staff lounge and training room, a commercial kitchen, outdoor playgrounds, and activity areas for infants, toddlers, pre-K and kindergarten aged children. The CDC is similar to a daycare facility in the private sector. The design complements and supports programmatic objectives and provides a safe, secure, and age appropriate indoor and outdoor activity space.

This facility is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification from the Green Building Certification Institute using US Green Building Council Standards. It was also evaluated by the Army's Sustainable Design & Development Team and is endorsed for Gold Certifiable under the Army Standards. This building has achieved greater than 40% water savings and nearly 35% energy savings (better than California Title-24). Construction achieved more than 95% waste diversion (greater than 600,000 lbs), 95% of all wood products came from managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, better than 40% of all materials used came from recycled products, more than 40% of all materials were extracted and produced within 500 miles of the project site, and all materials utilized during construction met LEED standards for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

He has managed projects for NAVFAC and the University of California system of campuses. Mike also managed the first large-scale commercial wind farm on Indian lands in the United States.

Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) takes pride in doing business with the Department of Defense, and in turn supporting the troops.  For one particular project at MCB Camp Pendleton, BRADY was retained to "Design Flight Simulator Pad at Building 23194."  To many, this may  seem to be a routine task, or  just a bunch of concrete and reinforcing steel.  However, it was much more involved.  The foundation anchorage system was designed to sustain the tremendous torsional forces produced by each simulator. The geological conditions at the existing building site were very poor, which required BRADY to design drilled piers and work within the existing floor/foundation system to provide the support systems necessary to sustain the tremendous forces produced by the simulators.

A recent article in the San Diego Union Tribune spotlighted the finished product; a high-tech marvel that is also anything but routine.  "It gives me a great deal of pride to see the fruits of our efforts," stated Lee Biggers, retired Naval Reserve Captain, and Vice President of Structural Design for BRADY.  "In many cases we do not have the opportunity to witness the finished product, and it is very nice to see that we played some small part in supporting our Marine Corps pilots."  Lee Biggers joined the team in 2002 when BRADY acquired R.L. Biggers & Associates, a notable structural engineering firm based in San Diego.  "It is hard to go to any military base in the region and not find Lee's fingerprints," stated BRADY's CEO, Rick Brady.  "After nearly 40 years of designing structures, his legacy precedes him.  It is an honor to have Lee on our team.  He is a patriot, a professional and a gentleman."

The AAAV is an amphibious armored personnel carrier; launched at sea, from a mother ship beyond the horizon, able to transport a full Marine rifle squad to shore. It will maneuver cross country with an agility and mobility equal to or greater than the M1 Abrams. At Pendleton, the AAAVs are serviced and cleaned at one of the 21 wash bays within the AAAV maintenance facility.

"We have been designing, building and maintaining wash racks and wash water recycling systems for years, but this system was unique in its challenges," states Jim Bowen, Manager of Federal Construction Programs for BRADY. "Because we were replacing existing equipment, we had to create a new system that would work within the framework of the in-ground piping and collection points."

The project was further complicated by the size and configuration of the equipment room, which would house the new recycling and distribution system. These issues limited the possibility of using off-the-shelf components in designing the system. "It was clear that we would need to choose a manufacturer that understood the basic issues of oil separation and solids handling, while dealing with the uniqueness of the project site," stated Mark Owens, BRADY's Senior Vice President. "But more importantly, it was imperative that we addressed operations and maintenance issues associated with the high system demands at the wash bays. The Marines needed a system that worked, each and every time they pulled the trigger."

After extensive research, BRADY chose Enviremedial Services, Inc. (ESI) for the project. "ESI was able to address not only the basic and site specific needs of the project, but provided highly innovative solutions for the ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the system," commented Jim Bowen. "They are also very passionate about what they do, and it shows in the final product." The ESI system is equipped with sensors and telemetry that allows for remote, real-time monitoring and adjustment of the system. Geoff Keogh, Vice President of ESI elaborates, "We have developed an online database that captures significant system information as it occurs. If anything happens that could compromise the system we will know immediately. The client will not have to call us for assistance; we will already be on the way."
