Taking Flight at Camp Pendleton

Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) takes pride in doing business with the Department of Defense, and in turn supporting the troops.  For one particular project at MCB Camp Pendleton, BRADY was retained to "Design Flight Simulator Pad at Building 23194."  To many, this may  seem to be a routine task, or  just a bunch of concrete and reinforcing steel.  However, it was much more involved.  The foundation anchorage system was designed to sustain the tremendous torsional forces produced by each simulator. The geological conditions at the existing building site were very poor, which required BRADY to design drilled piers and work within the existing floor/foundation system to provide the support systems necessary to sustain the tremendous forces produced by the simulators.

A recent article in the San Diego Union Tribune spotlighted the finished product; a high-tech marvel that is also anything but routine.  "It gives me a great deal of pride to see the fruits of our efforts," stated Lee Biggers, retired Naval Reserve Captain, and Vice President of Structural Design for BRADY.  "In many cases we do not have the opportunity to witness the finished product, and it is very nice to see that we played some small part in supporting our Marine Corps pilots."  Lee Biggers joined the team in 2002 when BRADY acquired R.L. Biggers & Associates, a notable structural engineering firm based in San Diego.  "It is hard to go to any military base in the region and not find Lee's fingerprints," stated BRADY's CEO, Rick Brady.  "After nearly 40 years of designing structures, his legacy precedes him.  It is an honor to have Lee on our team.  He is a patriot, a professional and a gentleman."

The $30 million simulator became operational on July 14, approximately 3 years after completion of the foundation design.  For more information on the helicopter flight simulator at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, please visit the San Diego Union Tribune website at the following link: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/jul/15/simulators-lift-pilots-training/

BRADY Acquires JET
Press Release

July 4th, 2010 - San Diego - Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) is pleased to announce the acquisition of Jet Construction, Inc. (JET), an Oceanside-based firm specializing in general engineering construction. "It seemed like a natural fit for us," stated Rick Brady, BRADY's President and CEO. "Both firms have focused on water and wastewater for some time. For the last four years, BRADY and JET have been working together with great results." The primary client focus of JET has been in the DoD sector, particularly with Navy and Marine Corps clients.

To date, BRADY and JET have worked together on about $10 million in construction projects, and have become quite familiar with each firm's capabilities and cultures. JET's President, Brad Anderson, could not be more pleased with the acquisition. "We would not have considered such an offer from any other firm," stated Anderson. "The culture at BRADY is unique, and is a refreshing change from the grind typically associated with the construction industry. BRADY has shown a pattern of putting the client first, and delivering on their commitment for better and safer projects. We are certainly aligned in that regard."

JET was founded in 1993, and quickly became a proven provider of services involving wastewater and domestic water treatment, underground utilities including sewer, water, gas, and storm drains, as well as industrial and commercial piping systems. "The advantages of joining forces with JET are obvious for water and wastewater applications, but it also means a great deal to our environmental operations," states Tim Shields, BRADY's Vice President of Remedial Technologies. "JET's core competencies lend themselves nicely to the expansion of our remediation service offerings. The acquisition of JET will enable us to increase our remedial action capabilities, giving our field operations a real boost."

Brad Anderson will remain the President of JET, and will also become a Vice President of BRADY. "Brad has been, and will continue to be, the face of Jet Construction," stated Scott Reilly, Vice President of Construction for BRADY. "Brad's name has been synonymous with honesty and integrity, and we couldn't be happier to have Brad as a member of our management team. As we continue to grow, Brad and his team will provide tremendous insight and support to our operations."

Mark Owens, Senior Vice President for BRADY, elaborates on the significance of integrating JET, "We have been building our core competencies over the past few years in support of petroleum-related programs. The addition of JET will increase our work force and our geographic reach as we continue to provide such services within the Southwest United States. This move will be a huge benefit to our DoD clients, as well as our larger teaming partners."

BRADY will be able to acquire JET without exceeding any of the $33.5 million construction codes within the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS). Therefore, BRADY will continue to offer services to its DoD clients, while remaining an 8(a), Small Disadvantaged Business as certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

JET will continue to maintain its headquarters in Oceanside, California, just minutes from MCB Camp Pendleton, a valued client of JET and BRADY. While JET will maintain their identity, they will now be known as "Jet Construction - A BRADY Company." For more information about this acquisition and what it means to your organization, please contact Mark Owens, Senior Vice President and Director of Federal Programs for BRADY at (858) 496-0500.

ETC Chooses BRADY…Again
Electronic Transactions Consultants (ETC) Corporation has chosen Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) to provide professional engineering services in support of the Eastbound (EB) I-580 High Occupancy Toll (HOT) Lanes Project in Alameda County, California. The project, sponsored by the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (ACCMA), aims to improve traffic flow on I-580 in Alameda County by utilizing an existing eastbound High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane and a portion of the adjacent shoulder and mixed flow lane to construct dual eastbound Express lanes. The California Legislature under AB 2032 and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) authorized this conversion as a project to improve travel efficiency in the corridor and provide more options to individual travelers. The ACCMA will administer and operate the EB I-580 Express Lanes. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the EB I-580 HOV Lane. The Project Limits are from just west of the Hacienda Drive Interchange to just east of the Greenville Road Interchange.

Mission Accomplished at AAAV Facility
Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) has successfully completed the design and installation of a new wash water recycling system for MCB Camp Pendleton. The system is designed to provide high pressure recycled water to the wash bays at the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) maintenance facility in the 21 Area of Pendleton at Del Mar Beach. The AAAV is the newest USMC amphibious vehicle, which first deployed in 2008. The AAAV is part of the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) program.

The AAAV is an amphibious armored personnel carrier; launched at sea, from a mother ship beyond the horizon, able to transport a full Marine rifle squad to shore. It will maneuver cross country with an agility and mobility equal to or greater than the M1 Abrams. At Pendleton, the AAAVs are serviced and cleaned at one of the 21 wash bays within the AAAV maintenance facility.

"We have been designing, building and maintaining wash racks and wash water recycling systems for years, but this system was unique in its challenges," states Jim Bowen, Manager of Federal Construction Programs for BRADY. "Because we were replacing existing equipment, we had to create a new system that would work within the framework of the in-ground piping and collection points."

The project was further complicated by the size and configuration of the equipment room, which would house the new recycling and distribution system. These issues limited the possibility of using off-the-shelf components in designing the system. "It was clear that we would need to choose a manufacturer that understood the basic issues of oil separation and solids handling, while dealing with the uniqueness of the project site," stated Mark Owens, BRADY's Senior Vice President. "But more importantly, it was imperative that we addressed operations and maintenance issues associated with the high system demands at the wash bays. The Marines needed a system that worked, each and every time they pulled the trigger."

After extensive research, BRADY chose Enviremedial Services, Inc. (ESI) for the project. "ESI was able to address not only the basic and site specific needs of the project, but provided highly innovative solutions for the ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the system," commented Jim Bowen. "They are also very passionate about what they do, and it shows in the final product." The ESI system is equipped with sensors and telemetry that allows for remote, real-time monitoring and adjustment of the system. Geoff Keogh, Vice President of ESI elaborates, "We have developed an online database that captures significant system information as it occurs. If anything happens that could compromise the system we will know immediately. The client will not have to call us for assistance; we will already be on the way."

"It was very exciting for us to work on a project that directly benefits the Marines and their mission," stated Dallas Poore, BRADY Project Manager and former Marine Corps Captain. "Helping the Marines maintain their equipment with the new wash system is a great feeling. ESI did a great job in helping us to exceed the expectations of the client."

Put A Lid On It

If you heard about a UFO sighting recently out in the California desert (why don't they ever hover over MIT?), it may have just been BRADY's new aluminum dome reservoir roof structure. This project involved replacing the roof on a 1.5MG reservoir at NAF El Centro. The original reservoir and roof had stood the test of time for over 65 years in the harsh desert environment (average temperature is 110 degrees, in the shade...in January).

"The most difficult portion of the project was the demolition," stated project superintendent Richard Sherar. "The concrete support columns were designed to be interdependent with the roof structure, which made the sequencing of demolition difficult." BRADY's Activity Hazards Analysis (AHA) team worked closely with the design and construction teams to ensure that all safety issues were addressed early on in the planning process. The 150 foot diameter aluminum dome roof structure was assembled on the ground in one piece and then set into place by crane. We understand that the new reservoir roof now serves as a landmark for those visiting NAF El Centro, particularly Navy pilots and visitors from Mars. There is even a rumor that the base plans to extend the existing trailer park to surround the shiny new edifice. We were happy to be of service and to provide a place where the words "take us to your leader" may soon be heard.

About the Project:
Contract #N62473-08-C-2204, "Design-Build Construction Project for the construction of 07-0060 Replace Roof, 1.5 MG potable water storage tank, NAF El Centro" was designed and constructed by Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY).  The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.  BRADY received an outstanding evaluation for the project, and was granted NAVFAC's STAR Safety Excellence Award for "outstanding safety performance during project execution."

Working Overseas...Sort Of

Richard Brady & Associates (BRADY) has been selected by Naval Base Ventura to design and construct a 630,000 gallon pre-stressed concrete water storage tank at Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Nicolas Island. BRADY has teamed with DYK, a long-time teaming partner in BRADY's Water, Wastewater, and Water Resources business line, to design and construct the tank. San Nicolas Island [a.k.a. San Nic and SNI], is the most northwesterly of the four southern Channel Islands. (In Scott O'Dell's book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, the storyline takes place on San Nicolas Island).

Like its eastern neighbor San Clemente Island, San Nicolas is a US Navy owned and operated island. Located 65 NM southwest of the Point Mugu complex, San Nicolas Island is the cornerstone in Naval Sea Range capabilities. The construction of the 630,000 gallon water storage tank will mark the start of a multi-phase improvement project planned for the potable water system on the island. Nearly all construction resources must be shipped to SNI via Navy barge out of Port Hueneme, and construction personnel must travel to the island via Navy aircraft out of Point Mugu and spend each night on the island in Navy-provided quarters. The project involves the efforts of BRADY's Engineering Design and Construction Operations, and site work began in early March 2009.

About the Project:
Contract # N62473-08-C-7526, "SOLE SOURCE CONTRACT TO REPAIR POTABLE WATER TANKS AT SAN NICHOLAS ISLAND, CA" is under construction and is progressing ahead of schedule.  At the completion of the design phase, BRADY received "outstanding" evaluations from the Navy client on a past performance questionnaire for their design services and sustainable features relating to this project.
